Brooklyn Bedding vs Purple Mattress Comparison

Brooklyn Bedding and Purple are two leading players in the online mattress industry, both based in Southern California. Brooklyn Bedding originally launched with a few brick-and-mortar stores 25 years ago but soon moved towards an online model, offering a wider selection than may be found in local mattress stores. Purple made waves online in 2016 when it introduced the Purple Mattress, which featured the company’s proprietary Purple Grid.

Purple’s flagship mattress combines premium foams and a unique Hyper-Elastic polymer which creates a hyper-elastic polymer comfort layer to provide bounce and responsiveness that stands up to everyone’s wear and tear. The cooling cover is designed to keep the mattress temperature regulated at a comfortable level. With the Purple Mattress, you get the quality purple mattress with the extra comfort and support you need for your ideal sleeping experience.

Brooklyn Bedding offers four mattress models: the flagship Brooklyn Bedding Mattress, the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress in memory and coil, and the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Premier featuring pocketed coils for added responsiveness.

Brooklyn Bedding offers the Brooklyn Bowery all-foam model as well as six  hybrid models: the Brooklyn Signature, Aurora, Sedona, Spartan, Bloom, and  Bowery Hybrids.

While having a lot of options is great, it can be difficult to decide which mattress is best for you. To assist you in making your decision, we’ll look at how each company’s mattresses compare in terms of performance, materials, price, size, shipping, and warranty policies.

Brooklyn Bedding

Brooklyn Bedding’s Bowery Hybrid

Ascension Ultra Adjustable Base

The Bowery hybrid is an affordable memory foam mattress that provides great pressure relief and comfort. The comfort layer is rather thin, but the memory foam layer does a very good job of contouring to your body. The mattress also sleeps relatively cool, which is considerably important in warmer climates or seasons.

Brooklyn Bedding’s Bowery Hybrid is its most affordable hybrid model. The  mattress is medium firm (6) and consists of:

  • 1-inch quilted gel memory foam
  • 2 inches of transition polyfoam
  • 6 inches of pocketed coils (up to 1,032)
  • 1 inch of base support polyfoam

Brooklyn Signature Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Adjustable Base

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is great for most sleepers, thanks to its multiple layers of TitanFlex foam, a superior type of polyfoam that’s designed to provide the bounce and responsiveness of latex plus the pressure-relieving support of memory foam. With a layer of ComfortCoil gel fiber on top, this mattress has the cooling technology you need to sleep soundly throughout the night.

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid also encourages good sleep habits with its built-in partner sleeper function, as well as a Sleep Tracker that allows you to feed information about your sleeping habits and patterns directly into your bed.

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is available in three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (8), with minor differences in the foams depending on the firmness level selected.

  • Quilted cover
  • 1.5 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of VariFlex transition polyfoam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 0.25 inches of base support polyfoam

Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid

Electric Adjustable Base

The Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid, like the Signature Hybrid, comes in three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7). The exact composition of the foams varies depending on the firmness level, but the mattress is made up of:

The Aurora Hybrid is designed to work in hot sleepers’ favor. A cooling cover helps it keep things cool, while a top layer infused with copper and coated with phase change material for better temperature neutrality, ensures you’ll get the relief you need.

  • 1.5 inches of polyfoam with copper infusions and phase change material
  • 2 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 1 inch of polyfoam

Brooklyn Sedona Hybrid

Ascension Luxe Adjustable Base

The Brooklyn Sedona Hybrid is a medium (5) firmness mattress with multiple layers of pressure-relieving memory foam for those who prefer a softer mattress:

The mattress cover is infused with phase change material that helps to keep the sleep surface cool by drawing heat away from the sleeper.

  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam
  • 1 inch of denser gel-infused memory foam
  • 1 inch of transition polyfoam
  • 8 inches of pocketed coils
  • 1 inch high-density, base support polyfoam

Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Adjustable Base

The Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid, with its cloud-like quilted cover, incorporates infrared technology in its design for the purpose of reflecting 90% of your body heat back at you. The main objective is to promote quicker muscle recovery and enhance sleep quality.

The Brooklyn Spartan Hybrid mattress is a great option for those who do not have a box spring and will require an adapter (not included).

This model is available from Brooklyn Bedding in a variety of firmness levels, including medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7).

  • 1.5 inches of polyfoam with copper infusions and phase change material
  • 2 inches of TitanFlex polyfoam
  • 1 inch of gel-infused memory foam
  • 8 inches pocketed coils
  • 1 inch of high-density polyfoam

Purple

Purple Adjustable Bed Frame

Purple’s famous Purple Grid is made from a hyper-elastic polymer arranged in columns that buckle under the sleeper’s body, providing contouring pressure relief and exceptional temperature neutrality. Purple mattresses are ideal for people who want the benefits of foam along with the bounce of innerspring coils.

A breathable stretch-knit cover made of viscose, polyester, and lycra is also included with this mattress.

Purple’s flagship mattress is medium firm (6). For deeper contouring and support, the mattress has a layer of Purple Grid over several layers of polyfoam:

  • 2 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 3.5 inches of polyfoam, divided into two layers
  • 4 inches of base support polyfoam

Purple Hybrid

Purple Adjustable Bed Frame

For sleepers who like to make the most of their bed, pocketed coils add bounce and edge support. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they allow for minimal motion transfer and shouldn’t disturb a sleeping partner too much.

The Purple Hybrid combines the pressure-relieving benefits of the Purple Grid with a layer of responsive pocketed coils as a foundation. The following layers are included in this medium firm (6) mattress:

  • 2 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 7.5 inches of pocketed support coils
  • High-density polyfoam base

Purple Hybrid Premier

Purple Adjustable Bed Frame

As with the Purple and Purple Hybrid mattresses, these mattresses have stretchy covers from the Purple Grid that allow them to flex effectively.

Purple Hybrid Premier models are available for those who want a thicker layer of Purple Grid. The Purple Hybrid Premier with 3 inches of Purple Grid has a bouncy medium firm (6) feel, whereas the Purple Hybrid Premier with 4 inches of Purple Grid has a firmer medium (5) feel with more pressure relief for side sleepers. The two mattresses are identical except for the top layer:

  • 3 inches or 4 inches of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid
  • 1 inch of polyfoam
  • 7.5 inches of pocketed support coils
  • High-density polyfoam base

Purple Kid Mattress

Purple Adjustable Bed Frame

Purple’s Purple Kid Mattress is one of their newest products. Purple Kids is a mattress designed for small children.

The Purple Kid Mattress is a medium firm (6) mattress with a removable cover that can be machine washed. It’s only available in twin sizes.

It has the same great features as the Purple Mattress but in a smaller size and with added edge support There are only three layers to the mattress:

  • 2 inches of Purple Grid with polyfoam perimeter
  • 2.5 inches of transition polyfoam
  • 2.5 inches of support polyfoam

Pricing Information

Sometimes it is difficult to understand why some mattresses cost more than others, and to determine whether what you’re paying is worth it.

There are a few factors that contribute to the price of a mattress. Materials, thickness, and any special features such as heat-retaining memory foam coating can all affect the cost. Depending on the rarity of the materials and manufacturing process, you can expect to pay more for thicker mattresses or those with advanced temperature-control technology, organic or proprietary materials, and pocketed coils.

There is a wide range of price-points offered by Brooklyn Bedding and Purple, from  budget-friendly to high-end.

The majority of Purple and Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are priced within a hybrid mattress’s expected price range. As more special features, such as temperature-regulating copper infusions and phase change material, are added to the Brooklyn Bedding models, the price rises incrementally. Because of its thicker layer of proprietary Purple Grid, the Purple Hybrid Premier is the most expensive bed on the list.

For those on a budget, both companies have a few affordable options, such as the all-foam Purple Mattress and the Brooklyn Signature models. The Purple Kid Mattress has the lowest price, which is understandable.

Overall, both budget-conscious shoppers and those willing to pay a premium for premium features should be able to find what they’re looking for at Brooklyn Bedding or Purple.

Mattress Performance Ratings

Shopping for a mattress can be difficult with so many models to choose from. It’s a good idea to make a list of the features that are most important to you before you start looking. These may differ from person to person, but we’ll go over some of the most important considerations when purchasing a mattress.

Despite its bouncy and responsive nature, the Casper wins this category. The Casper does a better job of absorbing movement and minimizing disturbance across the surface of the mattress because it has a plusher layer of foam on top. For couples, this could be the better mattress.

The supportive coils and additional perimeter coils of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature win out here. While sitting and lying near the mattress’s edges, we felt more secure.

The best sex mattress allows partners to easily switch positions. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature and the Casper are both responsive beds, so you should be fine with either one. The Signature’s coils may make it even easier to move around.

Both of these mattresses had a small amount of off-gassing at first. This went away after a few days.

This is a nail-biter! Both of these mattresses are constructed of long-lasting materials and are expected to last between 7 and 10 years.

We didn’t notice any noticeable noise from either of these beds at the time of our review. However, because the Brooklyn Bedding Signature includes coils, it’s possible that these coils will begin to squeak over time.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature wins because of its coils, which allow for plenty of airflow through the mattress’s center. Consider the Casper Hybrid if you prefer the Casper but are concerned about breathability.

Trials, Warranty, and Delivery

Shipping

Most online mattresses are delivered as a bed-in-a-box or with White Glove service.

Mattresses in a box are compressed, shrink-wrapped, and delivered in a cardboard box. Ask a friend to assist you in carrying your mattress to your room and placing it on the mattress foundation, then carefully open the box and remove the plastic. The mattress will almost instantly expand to its full size. Most bed-in-a-box companies offer free shipping within the contiguous United States, but customers in Alaska and Hawaii may be charged a shipping fee.

Some mattress companies may also provide White Glove delivery, which entails having a third-party company deliver and set up your mattress for you. Your old mattress may be removed by the delivery team in some cases. White glove delivery is frequently charged extra, and it is not always available.

Customers in the contiguous United States can get their Brooklyn Bedding mattresses for free via FedEx Ground, but customers in Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada will have to pay an extra fee. Mattresses are delivered as a bed-in-a-box and take 3 to 5 business days to arrive. White Glove delivery is not available from Brooklyn Bedding.

Purple, like Brooklyn Bedding, offers free FedEx Ground shipping on bed-in-a-boxes to customers in the contiguous United States, with an additional fee for Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. Mattresses are typically shipped from the warehouse in 3 to 5 business days and arrive at your home in another 3 to 5 business days. White Glove delivery is included in the price of heavier mattresses. Customers in the contiguous United States can opt for White Glove delivery and removal of their old mattress for an additional fee on select other models.

Sleep Trial and Returns

Most online mattress retailers provide a sleep trial to allow customers to try out the mattress before making a purchase. Before initiating a return, some companies require customers to sleep on the mattress for a certain amount of time, usually a few weeks.

Customers who return the mattress during the sleep trial usually receive a full refund or, if requested, an exchange. Companies may arrange for the mattress to be picked up, or they may request that customers donate the mattress locally and provide a receipt. Customers may be responsible for return shipping costs or a small restocking fee in some cases.

A 120-night sleep trial with a 30-night break-in period is available from Brooklyn Bedding. If you’re unhappy with the mattress, Brooklyn Bedding may recommend a different model for an exchange or a mattress topper to adjust the comfort layer’s feel before issuing a refund. For customers in the contiguous United States, all returns and exchanges are free of charge.

Purple has a 100-night sleep trial available. Customers can return the mattress for a full refund or exchange it for another model during this time, as long as the mattress is clean and undamaged. Before initiating a return, the company requires customers to complete a 21-night break-in period.

Warranty

Customers are protected by warranties against defects in materials or workmanship. Warranties do not cover normal wear and tear or user error, so make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper mattress care. For mattresses that are deemed damaged under the terms of the warranty, most companies will provide either a repair or a replacement. Customers may be responsible for the cost of return shipping.

Brooklyn Bedding provides a 10-year limited warranty against workmanship and manufacturing defects, which includes foam splitting or cracking, as well as sagging or indentations of at least one inch. It is the responsibility of the customer to properly care for the mattress, which includes providing a proper foundation. If a mattress is damaged, Brooklyn Bedding will repair or replace it if it has not been improperly cared for or intentionally damaged.

Purple Mattress also comes with a 10-year warranty. Defective mattresses will be repaired or replaced by the company. Excessive indentation, cracking, and splitting of materials are all eligible defects, but firmness and comfort preferences are not. Warranty coverage is not available for soiled mattresses or mattresses that have been used without a proper foundation. A two-year warranty is included with the cover. Customers may be responsible for any costs associated with the refund or exchange, such as inspection or transportation.
