Founded in 2015, Nolah aims to create high-quality products at an affordable price. Their particular area of expertise is all-foam mattresses. They sell a single mattress at the moment, but their flagship Nolah mattress comes in four firmness options: soft, medium-soft, medium, and medium-firm. Brooklyn Bedding started in 2014 (only two years before Nolah) and sells only memory foam mattresses. However, they have steadily been increasing their model selection and currently offer nine different models (six memory foam and three hybrid) as well as six mattress covers.
What are Nolah Mattress and Brooklyn Bedding? Nolah and Brooklyn Bedding are two popular online mattress sellers that offer a lot of variety in terms of bed sizes, firmness, and material (all foam construction vs traditional spring coil system). Similar to Casper, Tuft & Needle, Purple, etc., they are both accessible, made in America mattresses utilizing innovative materials for better sleep.
To help you decide which mattress is better for you, I’ll go over the similarities and differences between the Nolah flagship mattress and Brooklyn Bedding #bestmattressever mattress (yes, the hashtag is part of the name).
Key Similarities
- Both mattresses are 10” thick foam mattresses.
- A dense foam base layer is present in both.
- Both are very breathable and sleep cool.
- Both mattresses outlast the average all-foam mattress.
- Price ranges that are similar
- Both mattresses come with a 120-night trial period, though Brooklyn Bedding requires that you keep the mattress for at least 30 days before returning it.
- Both companies provide free shipping and excellent customer service.
Key Differences
- While Brooklyn Bedding has a variety of firmness options, Nolah only has one firmness option.
- Nolah is softer than the medium option from Brooklyn Bedding, but I believe the soft Brooklyn Bedding option is about as soft as Nolah.
- Nolah’s support layer is thicker.
- Brooklyn Bedding is more elastic and bouncy.
- The comfort layers in Brooklyn Bedding are thicker.
- The cover of Nolah is made of viscose.
Nolah Construction
The Brooklyn Bedding mattress has a quilted cover that is breathable and tufted with soft memory foam.
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature has a layer of TitanFlex foam beneath the cover. For added cooling, this proprietary material is infused with gel. It also gives the feeling of responsiveness, which helps with pressure relief. A 1.5-inch layer of Energex transition foam is beneath the top comfort layer.
DreamCloud
Although the DreamCloud has a breathable foam-tufted cover, it is encased in a soft cashmere blend.
Ultimate relaxation is what first comes to mind when you hear about the DreamCloud’s comfort layers. The gel memory foam used for this layer helps create a slow-moving response to pressure that won’t wake you up feeling hot.
A layer of pocketed coils is also included in the DreamCloud, giving it a supportive innerspring feel.
Brooklyn Bedding Construction
- The top layer is 2 inches of proprietary “TitanFlex” foam, which conforms to your body and draws heat away from it using a special gel. This foam has a supple feel to it.
- Another 2 inches of TitanFlex foam follows, but this one is firmer than the top layer.
- The bottom layer is 6 inches of high density polyfoam, which is pretty standard.
Construction Differences/Notes
- In my opinion, the mattresses are roughly equal in terms of durability, with Brooklyn Bedding possibly having a slight advantage.
- Both are made up of three layers, with an elasticity layer in the middle.
- The top layer of Brooklyn Bedding has more elasticity.
- Both sleep cool, with Nolah having a proprietary foam top layer and Brooklyn Bedding having proprietary gel in its foam (which is actually a little cool to the touch). Nolah is softer than Brooklyn Bedding’s medium firmness version.
Firmness Differences/Notes
The firmness of these mattresses was one noticeable difference that I noticed as soon as I sat on each of them. Despite the fact that they are the “Firm” versions of their respective mattresses, they have a very different feel when you sit on them. The Nolah mattress has a quicksand-like sinking quality compared to Brooklyn Bedding’s options, but Brooklyn Bedding’s soft version is about as soft as the Nolah mattress. The Brooklyn Bedding has a little more bounce and a pillow-like feel to it.
Motion Transfer Differences
Nolah provides very good motion isolation, particularly when it comes to couples where one person is a light sleeper. Brooklyn Bedding does a pretty good job isolating motion as well.
Brooklyn Bedding is definitely a delicious mattress for couples, but if you’re a light sleeper, you may want to consider the Nolah instead. Nolah manages transfers better than Brooklyn Bedding. This means that there’s less motion disturbance when your partner moves around and that you can more easily sleep through each other moving.
Overall
Both mattresses are excellent options, and you’ll have a trial period to decide. Although the medium and firm versions of Brooklyn Bedding differ significantly from Nolah, those seeking softer mattresses may find the soft version of Brooklyn Bedding to be comparable to Nolah.
